Math tubs are a great way for us to practice our current math skills. We get to play fun games that help to reinforce math concepts. Every few months they switch out. Currently, we are working on math facts and place value to 100. Check out our fun new tubs.

This month we had an amazing opportunity to work with LittleBits. LittelBits are colour coded electronic building blocks. Students were guided by an instructor on how to use the blocks and given exploration time. They had a great time creating power, turning on lights and making a sound sensor. Our guide even demonstrated how to make a motorized car.
During Science we have been working on our senses. We are exploring each sense and discovering how they keep us safe. While learning about sight, we looked at the art of braille and even created our own name with braille using dried beans. Last week, we talked about our sense of taste and how it is related to our sense of smell. We tried three different juices with our eyes closed and nose plugged to see if we could figure out what kind of juice it was. This week we will be finishing off with our sense of taste and starting our sense of touch.
Can you make a parachute for Santa that can make him fly? Our class had a great time working with their buddies designing a parachute for Santa out of only a plastic bag, string, tape, and a cup. Students had to work together and think of a design. They then tested out their design and made adjustments. Our STEM project went great with our Santa/Elf theme this week. Using only the materials provided (paper, sticks, egg cartons, pipe cleaners, and candy canes), students had to design a sleigh for Santa to use. Students had to decided on a design for their sleigh and draw it out before building. Once students had their design finished, they started the building steps. The next steps were to test their designs and then make changes as needed. We had so much fun using our creativity and imagination with this project! It was great to see everyone designing and problem solving to help Santa with his sleigh! This week we started a mini unit on friendly letters. What better way to learn about letter writing, than writing to Santa! After we discussed what a letter needed, we looked through toy flyers and cut out pictures to show Santa what we would like for Christmas. After we gave Santa some ideas of what we may like, we brought our letters home to mail. We spent the rest of the week writing letters to other loved ones and friends.
Wshat is a Makerspace?There are many different ways to define a Makerspace but essentially it is;
A place where people can come together to use, and learn to use materials as well as develop creative projects. Makerspaces promote learning through play and can be created in a classroom, a library or even in a stand alone building. The important idea is that it is a place that can be used for a range of activities with changing and flexible educational goals and creative purposes. We have seen Makerspaces in all different shapes and sizes and whilst they are most commonly associated with using technology to create and design,typically the spaces will;
Our class Makerspace is filled with a variety of building materials to foster our creativity. Students are given opportunities to plan and build, make mistakes and revise, and experience hands on learning. This month we have began our unit on addition and subtraction. We reviewed both concepts and are now working on building our tool box with a variety of strategies. Right now we are working on using pictures and objects to solve number sentences. Ask me which strategy I prefer. Look at the fun way we have been practicing! We can hardly believe we have been in grade one for 50 days. We are half way to 100! We celebrated 50 days of school in 1950s style. We came dressed up in 50s attire, drank root beer floats and danced at a sock hop. During writing, we worked on directional writing using time order words such as; first, second, next, after, and last. Step by step we made a real root beer then wrote down the steps in a booklet. We discussed what life was like in the 50s compared to today. We learned the hand jive and the twist before heading down to the Sock Hop! Look at how much fun we had! Today we read Soda Pop Head by Julia Cook. Soda Pop Head is about a boy who gets angry and cannot control his fizz. He lets his bottle cap pop off and explodes on others when they make him mad. We talked about what we can do when people are bothering us and making us angry so we don't turn into a soda pop head. Ask your child how they have been proactive this week at school and what strategies they use when they are being bothered by others.
