Today we learned a new game that uses ten frame cards. Students worked in pairs playing 'Call Out.' This week your child will be coming home with ten frame cards that you can use at home and a list of game ideas. Have fun learning math!
We are starting our W.O.W today. Our words this week are:
I, a, and, the, see Check out this site for some fun ideas on how to practice your words. http://childhood101.com/2013/09/sight-words-activity-ideas/ We had lots of fun in Science today! Everyone started with a glass of yellow lemonade. We then added a blue ice cube. Ask your child what happened to their yellow lemonade. Grade One's looked great today running in their tie-dyed shirts! The whole school ran/walked around the school from 11-12 today. Ask your child how many laps they completed.
If we can raise $5000, the IREC staff will be putting on a fashion show! On Friday we celebrated Rainbow Day! Rainbow Day was lots
of fun! We spent the morning rotating between five centers. We made tie-dye shirts, mixed yellow and red shaving cream together, painted with primary colors, made a rainbow mosaic, and decorated rainbow cupcakes. Thank you so much to all our helpers; Ms. Twylla, Ms. Corin, Ms. Vicky, and Ms. Melissa!! Have you ever spoken with a doctor, auto mechanic, or computer support person that has given you advice or directions in a language that was too difficult to understand? This is comparable to reading a book that is too difficult. For readers to have high success in reading, they must spend time reading material they can read with 99-100 percent accuracy. We encourage students to select books that are a good fit so that they are successful and enjoy reading. Working on the strategy of reading appropriate level texts that are a good fit will help your child read smoothly, engaging in texts they can read without difficulty.
How can you help your child with this strategy at home? 1. When your child goes to read a text, have him or her use the I-Pick method to explain why that specific text was chosen. Ask your child, “Is that a good-fit book for you? Show me how you know that.” The I-Pick method is described below: I- I pick a book P- Purpose (What is my purpose for choosing this book?) I- Interest (Am I interested in this book?) C- Comprehend (Do I Understand what I just read?) K- Know (Do I know most of the words?) 2. Model the I-Pick method for your child. Take a book you are reading and go through I-Pick to set an example for what it looks like and sounds like to review reading selection choices. 3. Help your child recognize when a text is too difficult. They are taught to ask: - Are there 5 or more words on a page that I don’t know? - Is this book hard to understand? - When I read it does it sound choppy and slow? Thank you for your continued support at home! Written by: Allison Behne www.thedailycafe.com Ideas and strategies are taken from: The CAFÉ Book written by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser In class we have been discussing the right to be happy. We read 'Have you Filled a Bucket Today' and talked about what it means to be a bucket filler and a bucket dipper. On Tuesday we had a special presentation about being a bucket filler. Everyone loved the magic tricks! Ask your child how they can fill other's buckets and how they feel when their bucket is full.
For more information check out the website: http://bucketfillers101.com/index.php This week we have been talking about the right to learn. We read
David Goes to School and discussed how our actions can affect others' learning. As a class we came up with a list of what good listening/working sounds like and looks like. We also made our own No David poster with one classroom rule. Our class will be celebrating our final color day: Rainbow Day on Friday, September 19th. We have planned a number of fun activities to wrap up the introduction of
colors and color mixing (mixing the primary colors). One of our activities will be for the students to make a tie-dye t-shirt. Please send $5.00 to school with your child, to help cover the cost the t-shirt and the dyes used to complete this project. These T-shirts will become our “Classroom T-shirt.” We may ask your child to wear his/her shirt occassionally during the year for special days or assemblies. We need some volunteers to help us with Rainbow Day! If you are available to help us on Friday, September 19, from 9:00 until Noon, please reply to us by email or send in a message with your child. The school requires parent volunteers to have a criminal record check completed every 2 years. As it is early in the year, we welcome you as a volunteer in our classroom, but encourage you to complete this if you plan to visit our classroom regularly as a parent volunteer. As well, we are looking for a parent or two that would be willing to take home our t-shirts (following the tie-dye process) to soak them in vinegar and wash them prior to returning them for Monday morning. Rainbow Day will be our last color dress-up day and we will be taking a class photo.
