We had a great day today! This morning we used conversation hearts in math to practice place value and representing numbers. This afternoon we met up with our grade two buddy class to build a STEM project. Our challenge was to build Cupid a new bow and arrow and see how far it could shoot. We only had tape, 4 straws, 4 popsicle sticks, yarn and paper to work with! Students worked together to design the bow and arrow and then started building. We tested out our design and made changes as need to come up with the perfect design. We had to work on being mindful, patient, and our perseverance as sometimes it was hard! We didn't give up though!

Our STEM project went great with our Santa/Elf theme this week. Using only the materials provided (paper, sticks, egg cartons, pipe cleaners, and candy canes), students had to design a sleigh for Santa to use. Students had to decided on a design for their sleigh and draw it out before building. Once students had their design finished, they started the building steps. The next steps were to test their designs and then make changes as needed. We had so much fun using our creativity and imagination with this project! It was great to see everyone designing and problem solving to help Santa with his sleigh! This week we opened up our new center, the Pizza Shop. Students were super excited to get started playing with all the new tools. During this center we will be working on our oral language by discussing and practicing conversations the waiter/waitress and customer would have. By having students practice in meaningful/real world context we are helping develop their vocabulary, which helps them with their writing and reading! In writing we will be working on our organization by using time order words such as; first, second, next, then after, and last. We wrote directions on how to make a pizza using our schema from the center. Check out some more pictures of our fun center!
This month our dramatic play center has changed to a flower shop. Students will be taking on the role of; customers, florist, cashier and phone orders.
Every month our dramatic play center will be changing. This month our play center is a Vet Shop. Students have had a lot of fun exploring the roles of a vet, nurse, receptionist and costumer. Dramatic play centers are a great way for students to learn through play. Have a look at all the benefits to these centers:
Social Skills/Interaction–Dramatic play promotes the development of social skills through interaction with others, peers or adults. Dramatic play with friends requires compromise when assigning roles, sharing, taking turns, and cooperation to make it all come together. It is a great way to practice to relationship roles! Communication–Dramatic play promotes the use of speaking and listening skills. Children have to actively listen to the conversations and communicate in return. It is a great way to use and learn new vocabulary words! Physical–Dramatic play helps children develop both gross and fine motor skills Emotional–Children who participate in dramatic play experiences are better able to show empathy for others because they have “tried out” being that someone else for a while. Dramatic play increases self esteem and gives children a sense of pride and accomplishment. Acting out roles and being in control of the outcomes increase feelings of safety and protection. Making choices in dramatic play helps children develop a sense of self, individuality, and feelings of purpose. Literacy–Dramatic play is the perfect place to include a literacy rich environment and give children a chance to use their reading and writing skills. For example, reading menus in the pretend restaurant, pretending to be the waitress writing down the order, and the little chef reading the food labels in the pretend kitchen are natural opportunities for increasing literacy. Math–Just like literacy, dramatic play is a great way to practice math skills. Copied from Happy Brown House |
